Review:

My thoughts in two sentences: good twist on the Jane Austen classic. Nice light murder mystery, and no real suspense.

I liked the fresh twists and turns the plot took to create interest in such a classic. The little quirks of certain people (*ahem*) fit quite perfectly into the puzzle from the beginning, which was nice.

However, I AM going to complain about a few things.

1) for being a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, the romance was practically nonexistent, with no hidden fire or anything *rolls eyes* no one actually fell in love people

2) WHERE WAS JANE AND BINGLEY

3) if you are a stickler for historical accuracy this is sooooo not the book for you. I understand some things have to be changed for our modern times, but not all of those modernizations were necessary (ie that kiss in the MIDDLE of the courthouse?? That was social death in the 1800s!!)

Anyways the characters were decent. A little flat, since we don’t really get to know most of them except Lizzie, but decent. All of them were named exactly to their original counterparts (a little annoying) and sometimes we had exact quotes from the original (but it wasn’t that often).

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bennet, our heroine, was overall decent. Now, in the beginning, the story does a lot of telling and very little showing. You can tell me Lizzie is clever and cunning and smart and deserving, but she needs to actually prove it. Lizzie’s character fell into that dreaded YA trope of being headstrong and not actually using her head. She made a bunch of rather dumb choices in the name of women’s rights that really just weren’t necessary.

However, as much as I’m bashing Lizzie, she wasn’t all bad. She did improve greatly over the course of the book and make smarter choices, to the point where I was no longer annoyed with her being a little more on the foolish side than the original Elizabeth Bennet.

I have no complaints against Darcy. I kinda forgot about him 85% of the time tbh.

Overall, this book was pretty good. I had high expectations, and a rather reasonable number of them were met.

I still don’t like the romance tho.
