Review:
That book was much better than Frostblood. Pacing drastically improved, character development was richer (we had conflicting motivations people), and a more interesting and nuanced plot.
After the suspense and revelations of the first book, Ruby is leaving the Frostblood realm and traveling with the Fireblood delegate, Kai, to the Fireblood land. She hopes to uncover information that will help her and her allies defeat the evil spirit that vanished at the end of the last book. However, to obtain that information, she has to pass three trials that will make her a Fireblood master.
It really is just that simple, don’t make it more complicated.
Ruby’s still a tantrum-prone brat, but she actually had to work at something in her life for once instead of life’s greatest gifts just being handed to her on a silver platter. She had to train with her gift and learn to accept failure and improve. I admit I did love those three trials. All were unique, creative, and full of suspense, hats off to you, Elly Blake.
Now. With that being said. Let me first write a disclaimer that I despise love triangles. Despise them. So if you like them, you will probably like this one.
However, I don’t. SO Ruby being attracted to the Fireblood delegate, Kai, is annoying and throws her loyalty to and trust of Arcus into jeopardy which I didn’t want. More trust and relationship drama that I also didn’t want when Arcus found out.
No shade to Kai, he’s a great, multi-dimensional, multi-conflicted character all by himself. But in a love triangle? Against Arcus? Heck no.
The supporting characters were, again, rich and excellent. Brother Thistle, solid. Fire Queen, solid. Jaro, solid. Marella, solid. Loved em all.
ending with four stars because I subtracted one for Ruby and the love triangle lol
